Charles Bernstein Wins Bollingen Prize
PUBLISHED BY PASC | Jan. 25, 2019
PASC joins Penn and the entire Philadelphia arts community in congratulating poet, scholar, and Penn professor Charles Bernstein on winning the Bollingen Prize, the top award in American poetry. Bernstein joins a long list of prominent poets who have won the Bollingen, including Wallace Stevens, Marianne Moore, Robert Frost, W.H. Auden, Ezra Pound, Louise Glück, Robert Creeley, John Ashbery, Adrienne Rich, and William Carlos Williams. With playful permutation and penetrating wit, Bernstein’s poetry uncovers new meanings in everyday words and phrases, expanding the concept of what poetry can be and how language shapes both individual and political reality. His years of outstanding teaching and mentorship at Penn and projects such as PennSound have generated a renaissance of interest in poetry, bringing it to broader and more diverse audiences.
